Its been a while but Courtney Symons is a T9B Champion Again

Saturday 4th February saw The T9B Dynamic Billard Amateur Series season kick off for 2017 and what a start we had with 45 players battling it out. Again the venue used was the Raging Ball in St Albans. Due to T9B increasing the amount of players allowed to enter per event the format was changed for this season to a double elimination event to the last 32. Again we had a star studded field of players including Courtney Symons, Craig Osborne, Richard Twomey, Tom Staveley and the returning T9B favorite Steve Chick.
Matches kicked off at 09.30am after a short players meeting to announce our retained and new sponsors Dynamic Billard and Aramith Billiard Balls. It wasn’t long before the results were flying in and the tournament began to take shape but many players had split decisions on who would be the eventual winner. It’s great at T9B because of the handicap system a case can be made for all players and the eventual winner has always mega upped his game for that event.

Courtney Symons took on and defeated Darren Saxby 7v2 and it was clear from match one that Symons was going to take some stopping at this event. Phil Wildman had a disaster before he even got to the venue with car problems and he was beaten by an impressive performance from French talent Mathieu Ferreira 7v5. In the first round of matches eight of the 12 matches played were 7v5 or closer… this is a confidence boost for the handicap team to be getting things so close.
In the winners qualifying round Courtney Symons continued on his steam train for one as he bypassed Daniel Lernihan 7 racks to 3. Craig Osborne began the event well as he got the better of Jazz Bamotra 7v5, this was a tricky game for Craig as last time the pair met Jazz was ended on top. Richard Twomey hasn’t been seen for awhile at T9B events and he was on the receiving end of a Ricky Ellis trouncing 7v0. Welcome Back Rich. Steve Davison produced one of his best performances to date as he defeated Chris ‘The Fizz’ Parker 7v5. The T9B cue clowns began the event surprisingly well with Nick Hampton knocking out the Bulgarian superstar Veso Papradanov and Mark Parker achieved a brilliant 7v1 victory against Tom Staveley.
At this stage we had 16 qualifiers and just needed the losing players to play off for the 16 remaining non seeded places in the main event draw. Tom Staveley recovered from his earlier defeat and took out GJ Oyangoren 7v4. Chris Parker and Richard Twomey both advanced 7v4 as they ended the event for Ricki Hatherley and Neil Margossan respectively.

The Last 32

We had both women entrance still in the event at this stage, Alexandra Cunha produced the result of the day with a brilliant 7v4 win against Tom Staveley, while the talented Aorr Angel Hickson just missed out 6v7 against Mark Newell, Courtney Symons and Craig Osborne recorded 7v2 and 7v3 over Filip Krawczyk and Daniel Lernihan. Nick Hampton won 7v4 against James Topliff while James Taylor ended Zak Shepherds first ever T9B event 7v6.

Tickets were sold as normal to add to the accumulated pot of £170 and three players were drawn to take on the breakdish which stood at £20 per ball with a £120 bonus for the 10ball clearance. First up Veso Papradanov but he unfortunately broke dry. Next up was Craig Osborne who also broke dry and the 3rd player was again Craig Osborne this time he sunk a ball off the break but I think the pressure of everyone watching got to him as he miscued the following shot. Unlucky Craig.

Last 16

So with just 16 players remaining each player knew a win in this match would guarantee themselves so well earned prize money. The results are listed below

Alex Colghan 3v7 Tony Burton
Nick Hampton 4v7 Jazz Bamotra
Alexandra Cunha 6v7 Steve Davison
Courtney Symons 7v2 Chris Parker
Rich Twomey 7v4 Craig Osborne

Mark Newell 7v5 Veso Papradanov
Adrian Hickson 4v7 James Taylor

Quarter Finals

Tony Burton looked in cracking form as he defeated Jazz Bamotra 7v4, Courtney Symons was pushed all the way but a mega improved Steve Davison by ended up a 7v6 winner, Richard Twomey brought his ‘A’ game against Wayne Rooke winning 7v1 and Mark Newell lite the fire burners as he cruised to a 7v1 victory over James Taylor

Semi Finals

Courtney Symons dropped 5 racks in this round but gained a pleasing 7v5 win against an in form Tony Burton while Mark Newell was literally on fire as he booked his space in the Final 7v2 against Rich Twomey

Courtney Symons would take on Mark Newell for the extra cash, ranking points and Champion Of Champions space. This match looked like it would go all the way. Courtney levelled at 5v5 and then went into overdrive to win the match 7v5.

It was a brilliant day for Courtney winning 49 racks while just dropping 25. Also many compliments for the way Mark Newell played and some impressive wins.

Another fantastic T9B event with lots of great feedback and it’s a brilliant to see so many players supporting the events. Thanks to our sponsors, Aramith Billiard Balls, Dynamic Billard and Raging Ball.
Even though we are around 4 weeks away from Amateur Series Event 2 held on Saturday 4th March. We only have 16 spaces remaining so if you would like to be part of this event please do act quickly by contacting Mark parker, Nick Hampton or Phil Wildman
